Bela Lugosi: Black Friday (1940)

In Tim Burton's Ed Wood Bela Lugosi was depicted as resenting Boris Karloff; this odd little film is perhaps proof that the sentiment was real.  This stands as an odd curiosity in Lugosi's screen appearances--though he gets top billing, he actually spends little time on the screen the role of a gangster side kick of crook with a secret.  The reason for this was that he was originally cast in the role of the doctor and Karloff in the role of the professor, but Karloff wanted the role of the doctor and Universal decided to switch the role.  Rather than submitting to the role reversal, Lugosi instead asked for the role of the minor gangster.
